Knee

It was not too long ago when a prominent athlete, let’s call him ‘Brandon’, came to Reboot Pure looking for help. The truth is, Brandon suffered a major knee injury in the middle of a professional game, and was carted off on a stretcher. He thought that he would never play again, which scared them – because he saw the hard, excruciating work he had pushed them through every single day of his life slipping away.

His injury was kept a secret from the public. People knew he had a knee problem, but no one knew how severe was except for Brandon and his doctor. At first, no one was sure if he would walk straight again. Then, he was upgraded to partial movement. Then he was upgraded to mobility with excessive rehabilitation. Finally, he was upgraded to full mobility with moderate rehabilitation.

Brandon had been given another chance to go for the dream, but the dangers of his injury lingered long past his knee problems. While he continued to undergo physical therapy and rehabilitation, he was put on prescription pain medications to help foster the healing process, and stave off some of the pain. Brandon followed the doctor’s recommended dosage every day, but over time, he built up a tolerance. It turned into one pill in the morning and a half in the afternoon – then two full pills a day, then two and a half pills a day, and then three.

The pain was becoming more and more apparent, even though his body was healing then, on the last day of his rehabilitation, the doctor stopped prescribing painkillers. Now, you can probably see where this is going – and Brandon did, too. He knew exactly what he was doing, but he had a professional career to think about, people he was taking care of, pain that wouldn’t go away, connections that were willing to put themselves at risk for him, and money to cover it all up and keep it hidden.

Brandon, a star athlete, and someone people looked up to, had turned to the streets for drugs. His dosage grew out of control, and even though his knee was healthy, Brandon now needed detox treatment.

Brandon when through detox, and diligently followed every single step. He was no stranger to a strict regimen, and he cycled through the detox program with flying colors. But when he got out, he still craved the drugs. If Brandon had not come to Reboot Pure after the detox treatment – so he could rewire his mind to relinquish the need for prescription pain pills, he would have relapsed several times over – putting his career at risk, his loved ones at risk, and himself at risk.
That’s why Brandon is one of our many anonymous advocates, today. His story is proof that the mind is an incredibly powerful tool, that will crave the very thing that we want to stop and can’t without proper training.
